I’m obviously someone who is really passionate about size inclusivity and representation in sewing patterns. I sent out an email a couple of months ago talking about whether or not plus-sizes are going out of style so I’m going to try not to repeat myself here—but no promises.
In case you missed it…
Daughter Judy has joined the Big 5 with eliminating plus-size representation. If you’re like, “girl what are you talking about?” check out these posts on reddit:

I also just released a YouTube video sharing my thoughts on this debacle as well:
It’s hard not to take things like this as a slap in the face.
Like I said in the caption for this video, this is feeling a lot like what Target has done to the Black community with the elimination of DEI programs. For so long, Target has marketed to the Black community and made us feel like they were invested in entrepreneurs of color, only to eliminate programs one breath after the current administration deemed DEI no longer necessary.
The second that DJ determined they wanted a rebrand, the fat sewists were no longer deemed important enough to be prioritized in representation. However, Chelsea has been size-inclusive from the start, making us feel like her brand was safe for us.
One soapbox I’ll never get off is the importance of size inclusivity
I’m still being fat shamed on one of my recent posts so this is definitely something that is still fresh on my mind. I’ve been told that I’m “brave” for showing my body in a swimsuit as I talk about the pattern and things. Why existing in my in a swimsuit is brave is besides me… Like should I be naked?
But whereas some brands think that plus-sizes don’t need to be represented, PatternCon knows it does and I’m excited to share that I will be delivering a keynote talking about size inclusivity and plus-size representation in sewing—and I want you to come meet me there!
We’ll be in Charlotte, NC the first weekend of August and I can’t wait. I love that this conference is dedicated to teaching people how to learn more about making patterns work for their bodies.
So tell me: what are your thoughts on this whole Daughter Judy situation?
Thank you! My granddaughter is plus sized and I am always looking for role models and patterns for her.
